The heart rate monitor does not send or receive data until you put it on. Hold the touchscreen. Select Settings > Sensors & Accessories > Add New. Bring the device within 3 m (10 ft.) of the sensor, and wait while the device pairs with the sensor. After the device connects to the sensor, an icon appears at the top of the screen.

Sometimes I increase to 6.3 mph on mile 2, 6.4 mph on mile 3 etc. Anyway, every 4th minute is the 3.8 mph walk. When I awkwardly try to sneak glances at my watch on the walk it says something like 15:45 minute pace, which is about right, but my run pace is usually something over 10 minutes, maybe even as much as 10:40, when at 6.3 mph it should

For the vívoactive® 3 device, the default value for the Heart Rate setting is Auto. The device automatically uses the wrist-based heart rate monitor unless you pair a chest heart rate monitor to the device. NOTE:Disabling the wrist-based heart rate monitor also disables your VO2 max. estimate, intensity minutes, and the all-day stress feature.

I wear my "old" Vivoactive HR day and night. This model measures the heart rate during sleep time every few minutes. Most of the time the optical heart rate sensor is dark and not disturbing. I do not know when and why, but sometimes in the night the green light of the sensor flashes up and gets very bright.

This is a low cost GPS general activity watch which includes a wrist heart rate sensor. A nice upgrade for those who had the forerunner 35.
